2/17/2024 0 Comments High Sierra for apple instalI don't know why either, maybe there was a problem updating the firmware. There may have been another way, but I couldn't figure it out. I then had to open the iMac again, swap the SSD for the HDD again, and then I could do a fresh install. To install High Sierra on the third-party SSD, I had to open the iMac again, put an OEM Apple HDD back, install an OS before high Sierra, then upgrade to High Sierra, installing the Firmware in the process. I forget the exact message, or if there even was one, but I think I wasn't even able to start the install process because the SSD showed as greyed out on the installer when picking the installation drive. This gives you the latest version of the macOS currently or most recently installed. Only when downloading from within High Sierra I get an installer that contains the installation files, when I download it in Sierra, my installer is also just about 8 MB, the installation files are downloaded only on install (no idea where the system is storing them during installation). Install while your Mac is started up from macOS Recovery. Then try updating or installing macOS again. The issue appeared when I went to do a clean install of High Sierra on the new SSD. Use Disk Utility to repair your startup disk. I swapped with a third-party SSD and cloned the OS from another Mac I had and was running High Sierra on it just fine. If you had previously created a boot installer for the High Sierra beta you may notice the syntax is different for createinstallmedia is different with the final version, part of that is to accommodate the new file name of the application installer, and the remainder removes the necessity of the applicationpath flag and directive. The reason why is because I pulled a failing HDD from the Mac that only had Yosemite installed. I could install earlier OS versions, but not High Sierra. I have personally had a firmware issue on an iMac that prevented me from installing High Sierra to an non-Apple SSD.
